Additional One-off Public Holiday on Monday, 26 September 2022
Following the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Government has announced a national one-off public holiday for 26 September 2022. The Public Holiday will be called Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day.
What do I need to do?
- It will be a one-off holiday held on 26 September 2022 only.
- All normal public holidays requirements will apply, such as the requirement to pay time and a half for any hours worked on the public holiday or ensure employees receive their usual pay if it would be an otherwise working day for them. Usual public holiday rules must be complied with.

- Please note, South Canterbury’s regional anniversary day is also due to be observed on 26 September 2022. In the case of overlapping public holidays, an employer is only obligated to pay for one public holiday. If you are impacted by this, you can mutually agree with your employees to observe the public holiday on another day should you wish to, however you are not required to do so.
